Preface

I offer this collection of photographs with respect and encouragement to each person beginning to find his or her way in photography, and to each casual photographer who records family events, pets, and trips.

Stretch yourself. Reach for satisfactions in photography that only you can recognize. I challenge you to find subject matter you care about strongly, that no one else would know to photograph, that no one else would photograph your way.

everyday is a selection of images I made from 1950 to the present. None were made for a market. All were made for personal satisfaction - collectively an enthusiast's view of his world, one man's photographic exploration of his time and place.

I do not suggest you use these or anyone else's photos as models. You are unique. You have your own eye, mind, and feelings. Trust your feelings and you will develop your distinctive way of seeing the world. You will build your own values, approaches, and visual vocabulary. You will grow your own inner critic. No one but you should choose your path in personal photography. Make your own collection of images, unlike anyone else's.

In addition to my photographs, I offer observations on matters I have found important, and pass them on for your consideration. May you enjoy your photographic journey of discovery as much as I have mine.
